The Women's Timber Corps

The Women's Timber Corps was created to replace the men who left to join the armed forces. Women who joined the W.T.C. were commonly known as Lumber Jills. As many of the women who had joined the Forestry Commission came from the Women's Land Army, the W.L.A. took over the administration and recruitment for the W.T.C. and although the W.T.C. was officially part of the WLA it retained a separate identity. The uniforms were identical except that the W.T.C. replaced the W.L.A. felt hat for a beret and wore the WTC badge.
