A Brief History of the W.L.A.

During the Second World War Britain knew it would be hard to produce enough food to feed everyone. Young women, often from towns and cities, were recruited to work on farms to replace men who went to fight. Some had never left the cities they lived in before. They worked long hours for low pay but many say it was the best time of their lives.

Despite the misleading term "Army", the W.L.A. was a civilian organisation who’s uniform is recognised as one of the most distinctive symbols of the Home Front.
